Home / Intervention Areas
The main economic assets of the Niassa province are its vast areas of non-used land, its landscapes and wildlife. A part of those non-used lands are, however, degraded agricultural surfaces. These natural resources have potential to be used for the province’s economic development.
Niassa still needs to promote and attract capacity to develop these resources in terms of basic economic criteria such as know-how, infrastructure, market capital, electric power and communications.
Most part of the population still practices subsistence agriculture based on slash and burn. This provides a very low return considering the amount of labour used and is also ecologically destructive and unsustainable in the long run.
The need still exists to promote productive sectors that can make use of large land areas, especially the sectors of forestry, agriculture, wildlife, and tourism. This requires complementary interventions such as improving the business environment, financial and community development services as well as approaching crosscutting issues such as HIV/AIDS and gender.
The method to develop the three main sectors involves creating critical mass in each sector, inviting capital and know-how from national and foreign investors through segmented and proactive campaigns. Government and donors are actively doing their best to improve electric power supply, transport equipments, communications and other infrastructural needs.
